Abstract

Democracy on the Internet opens up a new dimension in the process of communication and information dissemination. This research focuses on the use of new media as a medium to facilitate the dissemination of information, where information can be accessed without restriction and users are free to share, voice opinions and also able to increase their political participation. The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between democracy of information through new media space with online and offline political participation among urban youth. Purposive random sampling technique was used and involved 250 respondents from Bangi and Kajang. Data is presented in a descriptive form such as frequencies, percentages and means by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS version 22). In addition, Pearson correlation is used to determine the relationship among the variables. Overall, results showed that use of new media has a significant relationship with online and offline political participation. The results also support that new media act as a space for the democratization of information and youth are active in political participation both online and offline. Future study could employ different methods and compare the political participation of rural and urban youth.
