Wireless sensor networks: An overview of multi-objective optimization problems

Abstract

The optimal number of sensors while deployment of the wireless network is one of the core concerns for the network operators. This problem begins at the planning stage as the complete working of the network relies on the data gathered from the deployed sensors. In this regard, this paper presents a survey of the main optimisation techniques used in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in the literature along with their associated problems. We first present various underlying objectives used in the current context and then analyse these objectives to demonstrate their contradicting features and their dependency on the overall network design. In addition to it, an overview of different performance constraints which should be considered while deployment of WSNs is also presented in this paper. The main focus of this work is to provide an overview of the multi-objective optimisation problems in WSNs where the decision makers have to find a trade-off between several competing objectives for improving the overall performance of the network. While carrying out this study, the main emphasis is given on the deployment and placement aspects of the sensors in WSNs. Finally, a set of open problems has been discussed in this paper to handle the future deployment needs in WSNs.
