Utilisation of quarry waste as fine aggregate in high-strength rice husk ash concrete

Abstract

This paper reports an experimental study undertaken to investigate the utilisation of quarry waste as partial replacement of sand in the development of high-strength concrete (HSC) containing rice husk ash (RHA). HSC mixes were designed using water-binder ratio of 0.30 to achieve 70 MPa at 28 days. HSC mixes containing RHA was produced by using replacement proportions of cement with RHA from 10% to 30%. Then quarry waste was used as partial replacement of sand at 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% in the HSC containing the optimum RHA replacement of 10%. The compressive strength development of the HSC was monitored up to 28 days. Based on the results of the initial mixes, the mix containing 10% RHA and 20% quarry waste was chosen for further investigation on its mechanical properties together with the control and other HSC mixes. The findings suggest that quarry waste can be utilised as a viable replacement material to sand in the presence of RHA to produce HSC.
