Using the Rasch Model to validate selection criteria for open source software

Abstract

Various quality models and selection criteria for Open Source Software (OSS) products are being employed by potential users to assist them in selecting the right OSS for their needs. Yet, the selection criteria used can differ even between users of the same organization because of their biased perceptions on its characteristics. Therefore, selection criteria should be reviewed and systematically validated to ensure that the best possible outcome is obtained. In this paper, the Rasch Model is applied to provide empirical evidence on the validity of OSS selection criteria. This study proves that the selection criteria proposed can be validated using online surveys. The result can then be used as a basis for the construction of an instrument to measure the validity level of an OSS product's selection criteria.
