Ultrasonic velocity measurements on superconducting and non-superconducting TlSr2(Ca1-xPrx)Cu2O7-δ

Abstract

Ultrasonic longitudinal and shear velocities propagated at 10 MHz in superconducting and non-superconducting TlSr2(Ca1-xPrx)Cu2O7-δ (x = 0.5 and 1.0) have been measured between 80 and 300 K. Longitudinal velocity measurements in the non-superconducting TlSr2PrCu2O7-δ revealed a pronounced lattice hardening around 230 K as the temperature was lowered. Similar anomaly was not observed in the superconducting TlSr2(Ca0.5Pr0.5)Cu2O7-δ (Tc,onset to approximately 90 K). Both samples were then annealed in flowing N2 to reduce their oxygen contents. After N, annealing TlSr2(Ca0.5Pr0.5)Cu2O7-δ became non-superconducting while TlSr2PrCu2O7-δ remains non-superconducting with a huge increase in room temperature resistivity. N2 annealed TlSr2PrCu2O7-δ showed no elastic anomaly around 230 K. The N2 annealed non-superconducting TlSr2(Ca0.5Pr0.5)Cu2O7-δ revealed almost similar elastic behavior to the superconducting TlSr2(Ca0.5Pr0.5)Cu2O7-δ. The elastic anomaly was discussed in terms of possible collective ordering of oxygen atoms in the Tl-O planes.
