The use of computers in teaching beginning reading classes

Abstract

When teaching beginning first grade reading classes, teachers still use the conventional method, which is influenced by the spelling method. Computers have yet to be used for beginning reading classes in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Elsewhere, computers are used in beginning reading classes to accelerate the association of sounds and words with animated images that enable students to read relatively faster. By using computers, students can learn by themselves without the help of teachers at school, home or elsewhere. The computer curriculum for beginning reading uses CDs that are built with the program-learning Authorware 7.0. Our research uses a quasi-experimental method to measure the success of CDs when learning to read. Data collection instrument consists of a set of reading tests. Our sample was comprised of 86 students in a first grade class at Primary School No. 021 in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Furthermore, our sample was divided into an experimental group and a control group consisting of randomly selected students in the area of Bukit Raya in Pekanbaru. The results show a significantly higher success rate when using computers for both teaching and learning to read compared to the traditional manner. Moreover, the use of CDs showed significant improvement in reading skills.
