Abstract

This study examines the trend of using personal pronouns in social media users. A pronoun is the word used in communication to replace a person's name involving speakers, listeners and targets. The pronouns consist of the first personal pronouns (me, me), the second person pronouns (you, you) and the third pronouns (they, it). In any form of communication media, personal pronouns will appear in communication. This is because the speaker provides reference to listeners and the listener process the information that has been communicated about the target to form a conversation. Accordingly, this study will use the WhatsApp application as representing the medium of communication in social media to obtain the pronouns data. WhatsApp applications used in smartphones are selected as data sources as the medium is increasingly popular in today's society. Analysis of pronouns will be used Tatabahasa Dewan (2008) as the guide for the researcher. The study found that four forms of personal pronouns were used in WhatsApp users' conversations, namely the first pronouns (speakers), second personal pronouns (listener), third-person pronouns (target) and empty pronouns. The study also found three forms of personal pronounciation that became a trend in WhatsApp application namely abbreviation pronoun, dialect pronoun and contemporary pronoun. In the context of communication involving peers and prevailing in an informal situation, the use of personal pronouns is influenced by the intimacy and relevance factor.
