The systematic significance of trichome types in Pentace Hassk. (Tiliaceae)

Abstract

A comprehensive study on the trichome types was conducted using scanning electron microscopy on 18 taxa of Pentace (Tiliaceae) in Malaysia and Borneo. Attention was paid to their types, shape and density. This study has shown that the trichome types have significant taxonomic value, and are also useful in the identification of certain species, such as Pentace strychnoidea, P. eximia and P. acuta with the presence of hand-liked trichomes. Hand-liked trichomes are a brand new type of trichomes found in higher plants. Most species in Pentace were characterized by the presence of stellate trichomes, either on the adaxial or abaxial side of leaf epidermis. Pentace grandiflora can be distinguished from other species in Pentace by the presence of clustered peltate glandular trichomes, whilst cluster of multicellular glandular trichomes is a diagnostic character in P. macrophylla. This study has proved that trichomes evidence could possibly be applied as additional data to the classification and identification of Pentace.
