Abstract

This article discusses the pattern and strategy of utterance in Malay literary texts. Pattern refers to the convention and structure of utterance, while strategy refers to the choice of utterances in conversation. This study will compare the use of utterance in classical and modern literary texts. Text studied are Hikayat Hang Tuah (HHT) and Salina. The study concentrated on chapter 1 in each text. A total of 45 paragraphs in HHT and 127 paragraphs in Salina will be analyzed. Utterance analysis framework proposed by Greenbaum dan Nelson (2002) will be the basis of the study. The patterns of utterance that will be examined are initial position, medial position and final position. The results of this study found that that there has been innovation presentation of utterance in a Malay literary text. For example, the pattern of utterance in the modern text is more varied than the classical one. The content of utterance in the modern text is also more dramatic compared to the classical that is straightforward. This study has contributed about the style of utterance in the view of stylistics.
