Abstract

1. 1. The free, esterified and sulphated sterols of the sea cucumber Psolus phantapus (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea) have been isolated and the individual sterols identified. 2. 2. The major free sterols were 14α-methyl-5α-cholest-9(11)-en-3β-ol (22%), cholest-7-en-3β-ol (20%), 5α-ergosta-7,24(28)-dien-3β-ol (13%) and 5α-cholestan-3β-ol (10%). 3. 3. The major sterol component of the steryl esters was 14α-methyl-5α-cholest-9(11)-en-3β-ol (63%). Cholest-5-en-3β-ol (2%) was found in the esterified form but not in the free or sulphated sterols. 4. 4. 5α-Cholestan-3β-ol (63%) and other ring saturated sterols were predominant in the sterol sulphate fraction.
