    Abstract

Among the factors associated with students' low proficiency in Arabic is the readibility level of Arabic textbooks, that is the levels of difficulty and suitability do not match students' language ability. As research on the readability of Arabic reading materials in Malaysia is scarce, this study attempts to explore and evaluate the readability of textbooks on Arabic as a foreign language. Thus, the purpose of this study is to measure the readability level of the Bahasa Arab Tinggi Tingkatan Empat (BATTE) textbook used by Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) students through a cloze test; and to identify the differences of the test scores in relation to students' gender, the reading texts tested and the students' achievement in the Bahasa Arab Komunikasi (BAK) subject in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination. To achieve these objectives, a survey test was carried out on 390 form four students from a population of 5442 of all SMKA students throughout Malaysia. The test results showed that the average score for the BATTE textbooks is 49%, defined as frustration level, which indicated that the textbook is not suitable for the purpose of teaching and learning, and independent reading. Meanwhile, there is no difference in the test scores in relation to the students' gender, reading texts tested and students' achievement in the BAK subject in the PMR examination. The test showed that the readability level of the BATTE textbook is not suitable to be used as a learning material for the target group. This unsuitability involves all the independent variables tested; gender, reading texts and students' achievement in the PMR. Hence, the regulatory parties should take into account the readability level of a text before it is made as a learning material, to ensure that it is appropriate to students' language ability.
