Abstract

Orang Asli are the minority groups who were the first natives in Malaysia. They were the first race to inhibit this country about 100 thousand years ago and spoke languages under the Austroasiactic group. One of the languages that attract the researchers is the Mendriq language. Mendriq language is a language used by Orang Asli who are known as Mendriq. These groups dwelled at Kuala Lah, Gua Musang, Kelantan. However, this language is spoken by a total of 245 people only, in three villages known as Kampung Kuala Lah, Kampung Baru and Kampung Kuala Stail. This paper discusses and analyzes the pronouns of Mendriq language. This is a field study conducted at Kuala Lah for 6 months. The data are primary data collected from the native speakers. The data were collected through story telling method by a native speaker of the Mendriq language. Data were then translated by a translator appointed by the Department of Orang Asli, Kelantan. Data consisted of various types of sentences. However, this study focuses on the pronouns of Mendriq language. The pronouns are analysed descriptively. The descriptive analysis revealed that the pronouns have two properties. The first property is that the pronouns have all the three functions; as subjects, objects and possessives or at least two of the mentioned functions. The second function is that the pronouns can only function as subject or object, or possessive only. But each of these types of personal pronouns do represent the first, second and third person pronouns.
