Abstract

The Malay magnum opus has attracted not only scholars but media production team as well. In 1956, The Chronicle of Hang Tuah has been made film and awarded with best musical score in Hong Kong and nominated as ‘Golden Bear’ category in Berlin Film Festival 1957. Another eminent film which was adapted from the Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa called ‘Raja Bersiong’ was produced in 1968. The effort of filming and adapting these masterpieces continue in this millineum. Enfiniti Production has produced Puteri Gunung Ledang (PGL) in 2004 and followed by Merong Mahawangsa (MM) by KRU Production in 2011. The former was then performed as theater at the Istana Budaya in 2006. In the advent of modern technologies, both MM and PGL were supported by computer generated imagery (CGI) to give a better production. Another type of media product, the anime of Satria 7 depicts Hang Tuah and his four comrades in action series was released in 2016 by FINAS, RTM and Japan production house. And finally an illustrated book on Hikayat Hang Tuah in the form of retelling has been produced in 2012. In terms of epic acquaintance, it obviously attracts the younger generations. Nevertheless, the authenticity of these epics is dubious and contentious. Since the production houses were more concerned on commercialization, they realigned the story line and focused more on the filming technics, such as props, lighting, shots and locations. The consequence of modifying the features of the characters and misrepresenting the actualities of the chronicle will indirectly demote the legitimacy of the Malay magnum opus.
