The integration of CAD and life cycle requirements in automotive seat design

Abstract

Developing a high quality and reduce lead time is an important policy in designing a new product in today's highly competitive marketplace. To reach this objective, a systematic method that integrates several techniques is proposed. In designing products, one of the characteristics of a good design is consideration of the product life cycle in the early stage of the process. The integration of CAD system and human factors in designing a new product is the objective of the paper focusing on ergonomic and assembleability. Comfort is one of the outcomes in ergonomic and it is known as a subjective phenomenon; the comfort of a product can only be evaluated by end user. Besides that, assembleability is also an important requirement in designing a product. CAD systems as a support tools for the design process must be available to support the design engineer as early as at the concept design stage. The tools should be easy learning and well-known in industrial field. The study will propose a framework for designing automobile seat incorporating an engineering CAD system with two life cycle requirements which is comfort and assembleability. With this approach, a parallel consideration of the life cycle requirements can be implemented, consequently the competitiveness of the product is improved.
