The impact of tourism towards residents' satisfaction and support for sustainable tourism development: A study of tourism in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Abstract

Purpose: Researches on tourism found that residents' perceptions of tourism impact affect residents' life satisfaction. Studies found that different places' characteristic could give different impact. Moreover, residents' life satisfaction could affect their support for sustainable tourism development. This study aims to examine the relation between tourism impacts on residents' life satisfaction, as well as their support for sustainable tourism development in Yogyakarta. Design/Methodology/Method: This study was conducted using quantitative approach with survey method and data was collected using questionnaire. The survey involved 250 respondents. The respondents were residents of Yogyakarta who live near the tourism objects. Data was analyzed by using multiple regression. Findings: It was found out that tourism impact on economic and cultural perspective positively affect the residents' life satisfaction. Meanwhile, the residents' life satisfaction positively affect their support for sustainable tourism development. Contributions: This study is expected to give a brief view and insight for parties involved in tourism industry about the influence of residents' life satisfaction in mediating the relation between tourism impact and residents' support for sustainable tourism development. Originality/value: This paper provides useful information that are needed for tourism management. It offers a practical help for tourism planners and marketers to understand how they can improve their services continually that affect residents' life satisfaction.
