Abstract

The development of Internet and communication technologies such as Web 2.0 has affected the development of various applications that are more dynamic and interactive. The applications are developed to boost the creation of network society, social network and the process of online communication. For example social media applications, Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram and Twitter bring significant affects to new users to more actively interact with a variety of audiences. However, the use of social media has created a new phenomenon, namely the issue of surveillance. Surveillance through social media is not only beneficial, but also lead to negative impact. The aim of this study is to discuss the experience, awareness and knowledge of users on the issue of surveillance when using social media. This study used a qualitative approach, in-depth interview and focus group discussion among adults who use at least one social media application. The study reveals that most of the users have experienced, are aware and understand the issue of surveillance when using social media applications. In addition, they also use social media applications to keep updated on the information shared by their friends. The majority of them are aware of the importance of maintaining safety and privacy of personal information in social media. This research has implications in understanding the importance of social media surveillance, security and privacy of personal information when shared through the Internet.
