The effect of Solanum Torvum fruit extract on the liver and aorta: A histological observation of high cholesterol-fed guinea pigs

Abstract

High-cholesterol diet is linked to elevated blood lipid levels which is one of the leading causes of various chronic diseases. This study observes histologically the effect of S. torvum fruit ethanolic extract in high cholesterol-fed guinea pigs. Six groups of male Hartley guinea pigs were fed with either normal chow diet or high-cholesterol (2%) diet for six weeks, in combination with S. torvum ethanol extract (50 mg/kg BW), Atorvastatin (10 mg/kg BW) or normal saline (0.9% NaCl) daily. Histological sections of the liver and aorta were stained with oil red O staining and observed under light microscope. Plasma and liver cholesterol and triglycerides were also measured. Histological observation showed higher amount of lipid deposits in the liver and aorta of cholesterol-fed guinea pigs and the quantity was reduced with S. torvum treatment. In conclusion, S. torvum showed an ability in reducing fat deposits in hypercholesterolemic condition.
