Abstract

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of its criteria pollutants. It consider as secondary pollutant, the combination of high emissions of chemical compounds such as VOC, NO2, and CO with climate conditions may induce various photochemical reactions which lead to Ozone formation in the troposphere, especially in a regions with high temperatures and intensive solar radiation. The expose to high concentration of ozone in ambient air effect on human health, wildlife, and cause problems on eco-system. This article aims to know which of these pollutants (VOC, NO, CO, and SO2) and some metrological parameters (temperature and humidity) that effect more on ozone formation in the troposphere. Data of theses pollutants and the metrological parameters obtained from Department of Environment, Malaysia (DOE), this data gathered in Klang, Selangor area during 2013. Firstly, the data divided into 12 parts depend on months and normalize it. Then, SPSS software used to analysis the data to find the correlation between each parameter and Ozone for each part. In addition, excel charts has been done for average reading of ozone and other parameters to find the variation of ozone concentration during each month. Moreover, a field work has been done to gather some data of ozone, NO2, and some meteorological parameters by the researcher. The outcomes of this study show that ambient temperature has highest degree of correlation to ozone, it consider the main catalyst of ozone formation reactions in troposphere. VOC and NO2 are the most effective pollutants on ozone formation in troposphere during almost all the months in that year. The other pollutants (SO2, NO, and CO) have almost same degree of correlation to Ozone during the year. However, humidity had the most negative correlation with ozone as SPSS analysis showed. The peak hours of ozone concentration during the day depend on the concentration of pollutants and the intensity of UV, it starts from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The highest concentration of ozone in peak hours range 0.065-0.075 ppm. So, there are some technologies and rules has been implement to reduce ozone concentrations in troposphere to protect human life and wildlife.
