Abstract

Malaysian National Institute Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) states that the Visual Display Terminal (VDT) user is one of the group workers that are exposed to the mental health diseases. The mental health diseases refer to the mental disturbances such as stress, fatigue, anger, depressed, unsatisfactory work and others. Consequently, the productivity of the workers will decrease their emotional will unstable and thus reduced their safety and health. The application of ergonomics knowledge in working environment is believe can reduce the risk of mental health. This study focuses on the effect of ergonomics application in work system on mental health among VDT user in Malaysian manufacturing industries. The study was divided into two methods. Firstly, a survey was done in order to identify the level of ergonomics awareness, the level of implementation of ergonomics program and the percentage of ergonomics team in Malaysian manufacturing industries. Secondly, a case study was done at two industries. The objective is to identify the effect of ergonomics application in work system on mental health of VDT workers using observation and questionnaires methods. The result shows that the level of ergonomics awareness in Malaysian manufacturing industries is still in moderate level. Lack of information, knowledge and training about ergonomics are the main factors that obstruct the organization in implementing the ergonomics programs. Meanwhile, the level of implementation of ergonomics program in industry is still low. Only 13.3% of the respondents were organizing the ergonomics team in industry. The result in case study shows that application ergonomics in Tool factor will give major influence to respondent mental health in giving them satisfaction in work, increase performance, safety and health.
