    Abstract

This paper describes the development of a programmable system on a chip which is compatible to an Intel 8051 microcontroller (MCU) with the digital signal processing capability. In essence, the integration of these processing abilities gave birth to the dual core digital signal controller (DSC) chip which was given the name UKM8051DSC. The chip combined the unique control ability of the MCU with the inherent number-crunching capability of a digital signal processor (DSP). UKM8051DSC is a multipurpose reconfigurable processor. RAM and ROM memories are also added to make it a system on a reprogrammable chip. The chip was developed in Verilog using the Xilinx Integrated Software Environment (ISE) with the ModelSim simulator and implemented in the Xilinx Virtex-II field programmable gate array (FPGA). The chip was programmed to run some applications and tested to successfully work at a maximum clock speed of 80 MHZ. The design can.be customized in the development of an embedded system such as the MP3 player, modern, disk drive and so on. The program development and circuit implementation of the chip demonstrated herein that simple ubiquitous tools like Visual Basic, a spreadsheet program, an 8051 assembler, Xilinx ISE and ModelSim can actually realized any moderate size integrated circuit (IC) design. This lend itself to show that affordable and low maintenance IC design laboratories should be possible in any relevant academic institutions of the whole world.
