Abstract

The current trend in the development of electronic corpora over the past two decades has had a profound effect on lexicography in many languages all over the world. Both in its current status and the future practice of lexicography, it seems certain will be corpus- based, or even corpus driven. Hence, corpora are now indispensable tools in language research. From the large corpora, the patterns of usage and the semantic behaviour or the meaning potentials of a word can be easily recognised. Meanwhile, the development of the online lexical resource such as FrameNet (http://framenet.icsi.berkeley.edu) has the potential to support the lexicographical tasks, such as the elicitation of meanings and sense differentiation. FrameNet is an on-line lexical resource for contemporary English that is based on the principles of the theory of Frame Semantics. As product of a project in computational lexicography, this database provides information about the semantic and the syntactic combinatorial possibilities, especially the valency pattern of each lexical item analyzed. This paper discusses the benefits that can be derived from the FrameNet project in analysing the meanings of words and forimproving the writingof a new entryfora Malay dictionary project. The word melihat from the semantic class of Malay verbs as related to visual perception is used as a case study to test the potential of FrameNet as an on-linelexicographical reference database that can be used by a language other than English. The paper also offers a revision of the entry for melihat in the forth edition of Kamus Dewan.
