The characteristic of Proportional Band (PB) on a level process control loop

Abstract

This paper studies the characteristic of proportional band (PB) by measurement and control of a water level in a vessel. While the derivative D and integrate I controller remain constant respectively. The ranges of the PB are from 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1. For D controller the values is 0 and I controller is 200. The experiment was carried out on the SOLTEQ Level Control Trainer (Model: SE103). It is constructed on an epoxy coated steel frame with lockable castor wheels. The operation of the model was done in Direct Digital control (DDC) where all the measurements of flow and level are coming in directly to the computer and any output to control valve or pumps are also go directly from computer to the final control elements. Any changes of PB values made in control loop displays will be remained active until the next control loop display is shown on the screen.The disturbance to the process in the form of set point change from 50% to 75% and load change for 30 seconds. The result shows that the proportional band (PB) inversely proportional with the settling where as the values of PB decreases the settling time getting longer. Overall the PB indicates the stability of the process before and after the disturbance was introduce to the process.
