The bioaccumulation of heavy metals in paddy plants

Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe and Mn) in the paddy plant parts (root, stem, leaf, grain and husk) taken from compartments 3 and 4 in KETARA, Besut, Terengganu. Sampling was done during the harvesting season in April 2012. Wet digestion method was used to analyze the concentration of heavy metals in paddy plant. The concentrations of heavy metals were detected by using Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrophotometer (ICP-MS) model Perkin Elmer Sciex Elan 9000. The results of the study showed that the highest concentration of heavy metals was Fe, which was found in the stem, root and grain whilst the highest concentration of heavy metal found in the leaf and husk was Mn. This suggests that the bioavailability of heavy metals in this study was low and below the maximum level allowed by Malaysian Food Act (1983) and Food Regulations (1985).
