Sustainability in food processing industry: An overview

Abstract

Sustainability in food processing industry plays a fundamental role due to rapid global food demands. This paper is to discuss the overview of the Malaysia food processing industry. The sustainability concept, sustainable development and criteria are investigated. The sustainability for food processing industry is suggested and sub-sector of food processing industry in Malaysia is introduced. Fourthly, the challenges that Malaysia’s food processing industry faced is discussed include their impact towards environmental sustainability. Lastly technology roadmap in Australia and resource efficiency action in Europe are discussed and recommended sustainable framework is proposed to allow its adoption in Malaysia’s food processing industry in order to achieve sustainable practices in resource efficiency including energy, water and waste.
