Abstract

Elastic and ultimate strength tests on small-scale steel box girder models are described, the models being subjected to the combined action of bending and shear. The influence of web openings on the deflections and longitudinal stresses in the elastic range, and also upon the ultimate load-carrying capacity, is shown to be very significant. A secondary bending action, arising from the presence of openings, is identified and it is shown that a simplified method, based on an effective width approach, will give a safe, although slightly conservative, estimate of ultimate load capacity.
