Spiropyran as a rapid detector of tin in solid and liquid state and their toxicity test

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

Spiropyran is particularly interesting compound that can be used for the development of information recording systems, optical switching and metalchelating agents. This based photo-conversion design has dramatically changed its physical and chemical properties allowing such exploration to take place. In this study, a colorimetric - spiropyran (A) behave as a receptor for tin metal recognition (Sn-) in both aqeous and solid media under irradiation of UV light. The compound (A) exists as a spirocycle-closed (SP) form in dark condition is isomerized to merocyanine opened form upon addition of tin metal and shows absorption bands at 430nm. The absorption bands rise as the concentration of Sn-to the solution increase.Hence it provesthe compound is able to act as an efficient multi-addressable switching system. Finally, the biological activity, the viability towards both prostate and colon cancer cell line presented the idea of spiropyran (A) to be moderate potent activity (IC50± 15μg/ml) towards both cell lines. Results showed that spiropyranis not only elegantly performed as a good detector but also a safe compound to be used in many applications.
