Sound absorption of multilayer natural coir and Kenaf Fibers

Abstract

Numerous types of natural fibers have been widely studied as acoustic material in recent years. This paper explores the sound absorption performance of multiple layers of industrial prepared natural coir fiber and kenaf fiber. The implementation of soft fiber, which is the kenaf fiber in the coir fiber is targeted to improve the low frequency performance of coir fiber. Measurement of sound absorption of coir fiber and kenaf fiber in this study was performed using the impedance tube method. Several parameters including the introduction of air gap and interchanging the layer position of kenaf and coir fibers were tested. It is found that introduction of kenaf fibers greatly improves the sound absorption of the coir fibers. The best performance is achieved when the kenaf fibers is in the front layer of the sample facing the sound source. For sample with total layer thickness of 10 mm kenaf fibers and 20 mm coir fibers, the absorption coefficient increases to the average of 0.8 above 1.5 kHz compared to 0.6 for the same layer of sample thickness with 30 mm coir fibers.
