Simulation of groundwater level at Murzuk basin due to great man-made river project-Libya

Abstract

Water resources occupy a specific place among other natural resources. Water is the most distributed substance on our planet. No activities of human being and life itself are impossible without it because it can be substituted by nothing, groundwater is the main resource of fresh water in most countries those have a limit average of rain. Libya is considered as one of those countries which suffer from limited water resources availability because most parts of the country are either semi-arid or arid and the driest regions of the world. This paper focusing on the groundwater level monitoring due to time pumping of great man-made project in Libya at East Jabal Hasauna (EJH), the study was carrying out using Groundwater vistas software (GV), Modflow was the main package that selected for the simulation of water level, three hundred and four abstracting well was setting in the model and seven piezometeric wells as a target to monitor water level. Five stages of the simulation have been used in this study; the main idea was to get the steady-state condition at study area. The results showed the continued decrease of water level due to the simulation period, at the first stage the drawdown of groundwater level is 368.61 m.a.s.l and at the end of the last stage is 358 m.a.s.l.
