Abstract

Issues pertaining to language surface from life experiences that are filtered and processed by human cognition because they are experientialist in nature. Semantics prosody which is based on this principle looks at the usage phenonmena of a particular lexical item that is often used by language users. Utilyzing semantics prosody perspective, this study aims to uncover the issue pertaining to the linguistic value of the lexical item setia/loyal that is said to be problematic (in deciding whether setia/loyal falls into the positive or negative value spectrum). This is proven when in terms of social values, setia/loyal is often regarded as the utmost important value in nation-building. For example, setia/loyal is elevated as the second principle in the Rukun Negara/ National Philosophy (Loyalty to the King and Nation). Currently, the 1Malaysia concept as introduced by Malaysia's sixth Prime Minister has also outlined setia/loyal as one of the important components to ensure the success of the concept. However, the irony is past studies (specifically studies in sociology and anthropology) state that setia/loyal is aligned to negative values because by inculcating setia/loyal values, it perpertuates feudalism among Malaysians. The relationship between the social and linguistic values that conflict is related to the setia/loyal value. By utilyzing corpus based data (newspaper, book and magazine corpora) an analysis on the lexical item setia has successfully proven that in terms of linguistic values, setia is an example of amelioration or the upgrading of a word's meaning as when a word with negative sense develops a positive one. This can be shown from its collocations with a group of words that have also developed a good and positive sense.
