Abstract

This study focuses on the effect of strain rate towards typical micromechanical properties such as strength, hardness, elastic modulus and yield strength of 4N (99.99% purity) of gold (Au), wire using micro tensile testing and indentation technique. A series of micro-tensile test were performed with different strain rate values of 10°-10-4 min-1 on a 25.4 μm diameter plain gold wire. The nanoindentation with maximum load of 20 mN was indented on a near- fractured end of Au wire specimen, after the micro-tensile test. The findings showed that the micromechanical properties of 4N gold wire were varied with different strain rates. The higher the strain rate the higher the tensile strength, hardness, yield strength and elastic modulus. It is believed that the strain rate play a role towards the micromechanical properties of micro Au wire. The direct proportional relationship showing by the results is because that the dimension of ultra- fine wire, microstructure polycrystalline behavior plays a role on this mechanical behavior, at least in this particular ultra-fine wire.
