Preparation and characteristic of 9, 10-epoxyoleic acid α-hydroxy ester derivatives as biolubricant base oil

Abstract

Several novel oleochemical compounds were prepared through the reaction of 9,10-epoxyoleic acid with a number of aliphatic fatty acids in the presence of acid catalyst. The esterification of these products using isobutanol in the presence of 10% H2SO4 as catalyst produced a wide range of yeild percentages from 63 - 92%. The low-temperature behavior of each compound synthezed was determined through their pour point, viscocity and flash point values. The results showed that compound 15 the bulky ester behenyl derivative exhibited the most favorable low-temperature performance of pour point, viscocity at 37°C and flash point with -60°C, 290 cp and 297°C respectively. This is due to the attachment of an ester side chain with optimum length and thus improve the low temperature property signigicantly.
