Abstract

A study on the chironomids (Diptera: Chironomidae) diversity at pristine ecosystem was carried out at Janda Baik, Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia. The study was undertaken to determine chironomids distribution and composition at seven selected recreational streams at Janda Baik. Chironomid was sampled using the Surber net and six water quality parameters have been measured, namely dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia and nitrogen (NH3-N), total suspended solids (TSS) and pH. Results indicate that Chironomidae at Janda Baik was represented by three subfamilies namely Chironominae, Orthocladiinae and Tanypodinae, which comprises 10421 individuals. Chironominae was the most dominant subfamily with 9168 individuals followed by subfamily Tanypodinae (849 individuals) and Orthocladiinae (404 individuals). Polypedilum (Chironominae), Rheocricotopus (Orthocladiinae) and Rheotanytarsus (Chironominae) are the dominant genera in Janda Baik. Polypedilum spp. dominated in six streams and Rheocricotopus spp. was found to dominate in one stream called Sg. Kerul. The CCA analysis exhibits DO role in determining Polypedilum distribution and potential to be use as biological indicator agent for stream in class II and above.
