Portable and low cost optical line tapping device for network health monitoring solution

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to design and develop a device to measure CATV video signals. The device is used to display the image signal received from fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) system whereas the image signal is transmitted to the user from the centralized television cable location or satellite. The image displayed by this device will ensure whether the transmitted signal is in good condition or not. The objective of this project is to understand the theories of FTTH system operation and the theories of CATV video signals measurement system. Through the understanding acquired, all the information will be applied to the design prototype in writing prior to the actual prototype is developed. Before the actual prototype is produced, the written prototype needs to be approved. There are several processes involved in this project starting with a theory and system design, installation of the system, testing of the system and the packaging of the system. In addition, there are several important parts in prototype production; the portable unit and the part that involves passive components. In general there are two types of electronic components; the active components (transistors, integrated circuits) and passive components (resistors and capacitors). The difference between active and passive components is in terms of power whereas the active components need power in order to function. Based on the theory of circuits, passive components will not produce energy; however it will consume the energy. Areas such as the portable unit and the passive components will be used together to create the CATV video signal measurement system. This video signal measurement system uses components such as portable TV with RF terminal, CATV video receivers (devices that convert the fiber signal into an electrical signal), passive optical components, fan cooling and voltage regulator circuit.
