Abstract

This chapter deals with the different polysaccharide nanocrystal-based nanocomposites. Polysaccharide nanocrystals (cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), starch nanocrystal (SNC), and chitin nanowhiskers (ChW)) have unique properties such as high specific area and sustainability that make them ideal candidates for reinforcing various polymeric matrices. A brief introduction on the different polysaccharide nanocrystals, their physical properties, and the importance of utilizing them as the reinforcement for several widely used matrices such as rubber, polyester, polyolefin, polyurethane, starch, plastic, and proteins have been discussed. The recent findings on the manufacturing techniques, mechanical and thermal barrier properties, and other such unique properties of these nanocomposites have also been discussed.
