Abstract

A literature review was conducted to evaluate the current body of knowledge on language learning with a social networking site on mobile devices. There are two main approaches to conducting a literature review: the topical and the critical review approaches. The former relies on the researcher’s subjectivity to choose relevant articles, whereas the latter relies on the application of objective criteria. The present article proposes approaching the task of conducting a critical review by following the five steps of a quantitative study. First, a research objective and a research question were defined. Second, a significant sample of sources in the literature was identified. Third, data was collected from these sources after applying excluding filters. Fourth, descriptive statistics were used for the analysis and to report the findings. Fifth, implications from these results were discussed. Findings from the critical review enabled the authors to identify several themes which were articulated in a conceptual framework. Additionally, knowledge gaps emerged from the review of the literature. These gaps warrant additional research in the field of language learning with social networking sites and mobile devices for personalized learning.
