Abstract

Study on the distribution of ostracoda was carried out in offshore sediment around Pulau Perhentian, Terengganu. In this study, 12 sediment samples were taken at 12 sampling stations in Pulau Perhentian and analyzed for the distribution of ostracoda. A total of 931 living ostracoda and 3724 dead ostracoda had been found from the entire set of 4655 ostracoda specimens. The result showed that a total of 53 species belonging to 33 genus and 11 families were identified and verified. The families were Bairdiidae, Trachyleberididae, Loxoconchidae, Hemicytheridae, Cytheruridae, Cytherellidae, Paracyprididae, Schizocytheridae, Pontocyprididae, Xestoleberididae and Brachycytheridae. The dominant species was Cytherelloidea cingulata with 287 specimens. Trachyleberididae was the dominant family with 1667 specimens and had the most variety of species with 15 species. While family that had very low in numbers was Bairdiidae with only 28 specimens. Station A6 (ST A6) showed the highest abundance of ostracoda with 2664 specimens. While Station A9 (ST A9) showed the lowest abundance of ostracoda with only 16 specimens.
