Optical power budget and cost analysis in PON-based i-FTTH

Abstract

This study focuses on the performance evaluations in 8-branched Passive Optical Network (PON)-based Intelligent Fiber-To-the-Home (i-FTTH). We calculate the optical power budget and margin when design a conventional PON-based FTTH and proposed PON-based/-FTTH with different link length and splitting ratio of lxW passive optical splitter. A simple calculation is used to determine how much loss and power are available for each fiber link in both networks with different type of signals. The cost estimation for both networks including the additional optical monitoring, switching and protection systems are calculated and compared.
