Numerical modelling of the effect of openings in the composite beam flange of composite connections

Abstract

This paper described an investigation on the effect of openings in the flange of composite beam to the composite connection performance. The current study is based on nonlinear three dimensional (3D) finite element models. A composite joint with flush end plate connection has been used for this study. Parametric studies of openings location and size have been performed to investigate the effect to the moment rotation and structural behavior of the composite connection. The model has been validated using composite beam and composite connection experimental result for accuracy and behaviour trend before the comparison were made for influence of openings in composite connection. It has been found that the openings have potential to greatly affect the moment capacity of composite connection.
