Method for harmonics detection using TMS320C6711DSP in real-time

Abstract

Real time detection of power quality (PQ) disturbances is an important consideration to electrical utilities and many industrial customers so that diagnosis and mitigation of such disturbance can be implemented quickly. Harmonics is one type of power quality disturbances. This paper presents a simple and accurate method for detection of individual harmonics distortions (IHD) and total harmonic distortion (THD) in real-time. The input signal, spectrum analyses graph, THD and IHDs values can be shown in real-time and in one dialog. The analysis based on Texas Instruments radix-2 optimized fast Fourier transform (FFT) function which is coded in the digital signal processor (DSP). The hardware in this work uses the TMS320C6711DSP starter kit with a TI ADS8364EVM 250-kHz, 16-bit, 6-channel analog digital converter mounted on the daughter card. The hardware can cater for single-phase and three-phase voltage and current measurements. The results of analysis show the accurate values of IHD and THD according to the IEEE standard 1459 in real-time. As well as harmonics detection, this system can be used to detect other PQ disturbances (voltage sag, swell, transient, etc.) using other algorithms like continuous wavelet Transform.
