Measuring luminance of dawn with a DSLR

Abstract

The First appearance of dawn is difficult to be seen with naked eye due to its low intensity of light and weather condition and also depending on the eye vision of the observer. Thus, measuring the luminance of dawn, Ld with photometry instrument has become crucial in determining the time of the first appearance of dawn. The purpose of this study is to measure Ld and the Sun depression angle, Do at the first moment appearance of the dawn. This study is carried out using the Digital Single Reflex lens, (DSLR), in the period from February to December 2017 at ten locations in both Malaysia and Indonesia. The results shows that the average values of Ld recorded are 17.95 mag/arcsecond2. On the other hand, the results of the average values of Do were found to be -17.00° hence; we propose that Ld is 18 mag/arcsecond2 while Doofthe first appearance of dawn is -17°.
