Marital satisfaction and Yalom theory in Iranian couples

Abstract

Marriage, as a most enjoyable and friendly human relationship, shapes the foundation and structure of families. Having a satisfying marriage proves to be an advantage to couples, their children, and members of the whole family. The security and good health of the community are greatly dependent on the stability and wellbeing of the family. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marital satisfaction with especial attention to Yalom's theory (1995) among Iranian couples who live in Malaysia. In this controlled experimental pre-post test study, total participants are 32 couples who are the immigrants in Malaysia. They were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The survey was conducted with ENRICH (Olson, 1998) questionnaire and demographic questionnaire. Questionnaires were used to determine age, gender, education and years of marriage. Data analysis was based on qualitative and quantitative (mixed) methods. The findings showed that Sexual Relationship and Communication have the most significant relation on Marriage Satisfaction of couples. For achieving good Sexual Relationship, Household Chores, Children Responsibilities, Communication, Shared in activities, Friends and Family, Conflicts Resolve, Religiosity, Finances and Personality, Yalom theory components can be regarded as a good strategy.
