Abstract

Vertical and 2D electrical resistivity measurements were carried out at Sungai Kelambu, Banting for mapping layers and type of groundwater in the sandy aquifer of the area. Measurement of vertical electrical resistivity were carried out at 29 stations and 8 profiles were established for 2D electrical measurements. The true layer resistivities derived from inversed modeling were tied with the nearby boreholes in the interpretation process. Based on the interpretations, resistivity of the top layer ranged from 8 to 180 Ωm and this layer has a thickness of about 15 m. The underlying sand aquifer resistivity values ranged from 40 to 800Ωm with thicknesses ranging from 35 to 87 m. This sand layer was deposited on top of metasedimentary bedrock which has resistivity values ranging from 600 to 800Ωm. Beside resistivity and thickness information, contour maps of thickness or isopach and resistivity distribution of the aquifer were established from the vertical electrical resistivity measurement data. Isopach contour map showed that the thickest part of the aquifer was in the middle and in the southeast of the study area. Since the resistivity values of the aquifer ranged from 40 to 800Ωm, the aquifer can be inferred as having fresh to brackish type of groundwater.
