Abstract

This cross-sectional research examines the relationship between athletes’ satisfaction and coaches’ leadership styles. In general, leadership style is a critical determinant of success in any field of endeavour. In the field of sports, the complementa-tion of leadership style and athletic satisfaction is considered a significant factor in realising team success. This study comprised 194 male players from football teams of Iraqi public universities. Methodologically, this research used the Multidimensional Model of Leadership to identify the relationship between five leadership styles (training and instruction, autocratic leadership, democratic leadership, social support and positive feedback) and athletic satisfaction, as depicted by two instruments, namely, the Leadership Scale for Sports (leadership style) and the Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire (athletes’ satisfaction). The correlated results indicate a significant relationship between all leadership styles and athletic satisfaction. The regression analyses performed that the training-and-instruction style significantly affects athletic satisfaction. Autocratic leadership is negatively related to the satisfaction of athletes. By contrast, the satisfaction of athletes is positively related to democratic leadership, social support and positive feedback. The finding of this research emphasises the importance of the relationship between coaches’ leadership styles and athletes’ satisfaction.
