Abstract

Effect of sublethal dose of three insecticides which commonly used against oil palm bagworms, namely cypermethrin, deltamethrin and trichlorfon, were tested against one of the important predator of oil palm bagworms, Sycanus dichotomus. These insecticides were tested on female of S. dichotomous following direct dip method. The results showed that the sublethal dose had the negative impact on the predation rate and predatory behaviour of female S. dichotomus. The treated female predators were able to kill significantly two times higher (P<0.05) the number of Tenebrio molitor larva then were control insects’ predator at 24 hours after exposure. The treated insects were also taking significantly longer time (P<0.05) to excite its predatory behaviour as compared to control insects. This is probably due to the longer of time taken for predatory behaviour activities such as arousal, approaching, and sucking the T. molitor larvae body fluid. Result of our laboratory studies clearly showed that the importance of using suitable insecticide for effective control of pest population without harming much on its natural enemies. This is vital to ensure the applications of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system through integration of insecticides and biological control agents could be achieved in which at the time the dependency on insecticides usage in controlling the oil palm bagworms population can be reduced.
