Abstract

Sycanus dichotomous (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is considered as one of the natural enemies of insect pest in an agricultural ecosystem. Therefore, these studies were conducted to evaluate life cycle and fecundity adaptability of lab-reared S. dichotomous. The S. dichotomous was reared inside plastic container in Animal House, UKM for 6 months. They were also fed with alternative food source, Tenebrio molitor at different group of individuals (5, 10, 15, 20 individuals). The result shows no significant differences (P>0.05) in life cycle duration of different group of individuals. Number of male and female individuals also shows no significant differences (P>0.05) between different group of individuals. Moreover, mean percentage of hatched eggs and number of nymphs reveals no significant differences between different ratio of male and female group of Sycanus. However, there is a significant difference (P<0.05) in mean number of produced eggs and mean number of T. molitor amongst different ratio of male and female group of Sycanus. Hence, S. dichotomous is suitable to be mass reared due to high survival percentage till adult stage which exceeds 69%.
