Implementation of SOA and EDFA combination in DWDM system

Abstract

This paper describes the performance improvement of a DWDM system, utilizing Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) and Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) as pre-amplifier. At 10 Gb/s, the system performance achieved using SOA and EDFA combination is better compared to the system with an EDFA. The achieved gain is flatter over 41-channels ranging from 1528.8 nm to 1560 nm. Furthermore the amplified spectrum achieved using SOA-EDFA is more uniform, with higher value of amplified power of 18 dBm. The proposed SOA-EDFA amplified system is suitable for the transmission of DWDM signals over 100 km distance.
