Abstract

Malaysia has an obligation to deposit coordinates of basepoints which were used to measure the breath limit of territorial waters and other maritime zones to the United Nations Secretary General. Basepoints are the basis for determining maritime zones, legal maritime limit and execution of enforcement. How two important parameters i.e. the foreshore gradient and chart datum can cause positional uncertainties to the basepoints have been described. Trigonometric relationship between parameters proved that chart datum deviation of 0.2 m and foreshore gradient of 0.1° caused horizontal positional uncertainties of 114.6 m. Uncertainties of basepoint location become significant as deviations between chart datums increases and the gradient of the foreshore become gentler Processed result of basepoints location using CARIS software indicates differential basepoints location of 108 m, 169 m and 107m. These uncertainties can cause the country to loss maritime area.
