Abstract

The efficiency and expertise of Iban language teachers are reflected from their teaching techniques. This study was based on the concept of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) by Shulman (1986). The aims of this study are to explore and examine teachers' PCK in secondary schools in Sarawak. This study also strives to investigate how PCK is implemented in the form of pedagogical reasonings and actions during teaching in classrooms. This study employed a case study design. Qualitative data were gathered through interviews and teaching observations of four Iban language teachers from the District Education Office of Subis, Sarawak. The research data in the form of transcripts of interviews were analysed using Nvivo 8 software. Research findings indicate that PCK of Iban language teachers are influenced by their disciplines of knowledge as all the respondents have different teaching options. The findings also show that there are no significant differences of PCK between novice and experienced teachers. Instead, teachers experience is known to be a minor factor. In conclusion, PCK Iban language teachers are found to be influenced by their respective options.
