How do students value themselves? A study on needs and expectations of low achievers

    Abstract

    It is reported that about 25% of low achievers are school drop-outs who repetitively have behavior and social problems which contributed to their difficulties adapting as independent adults. The purpose of this study is to look into the problems, needs and expectations of low achievers so as to assist in the understanding of psychosocial and intellectual issues faced by them in schools. The case study was done in one of the secondary schools in Seremban, Malaysia. Demography of the low achievers was analyzed from the school's records. Research was done in a qualitative manner with three students as samples. A semi-structured in-depth interview was carried out to understand the research focus. Video camera, checklists and rating scales were used to determine the reliability and validity of the data. Nvivo was used to identify themes related to research questions. From the research findings, it is understood that the students wanted to be appreciated for who they are and their capabilities. Friends and the school's environment play a major role for them to help them be useful individuals. Thus, it is important to understand the underlying causes of these students' difficulties in schools before guidelines, rules and actions are developed for schools to be effective.
