Ground improvement of rubbish dump over reclaimed tin mine

Abstract

Due to economic reasons and the limited availability of good land, many recent housing schemes in Malaysia have been built on reclaimed tin mining lands. The geotechnical nature of these lands are usually unsuitable for development without prior treatment. This paper describes the construction of a major property development over a waste dumping ground on such land. The features of the project are described and the conditions of the subsurface soil discussed. The general procedure for ground improvement by dynamic compaction and replacement on the project is mentioned. Methods of quality control are also discussed. Measurements are made on the effects of the dynamic compaction and replacement works, and the results discussed.
